People were devastated when Carbone’s Italian Sausage Deli closed in 2013, bemoaning the loss of one of the town's few old-school Italian delis.

There were rumors of a comeback, but nothing has been solid until now.

Tony Lonardo, the son of Rosa and Nick Lonardo who owned Carbone’s, will re-open the eatery inside the new location for the live music venue Monkey Barrel bar, which will be at 4401 Tejon Street.

“We just signed a lease, and we’re going to start construction in January 2016,” said Jimmy Nigg, owner of the Monkey Barrel, currently located in the former Salvagetti Bicycle Workshop at 1611 Platte St.

That building is being redeveloped, so Nigg found a new space, which also happened to have a kitchen.

When he thought about what to put in that kitchen, he immediately thought of his long-time friend, Tony Lonardo.

The two concepts will share the same space.

Carbone’s, once a deli, will be a restaurant with a full menu. Its legacy is rooted in Denver history, back in a time when northwest Denver was a neighborhood with lots of Italian restaurants and markets.

The Lonardo family, who moved to Denver in 1962, bought Carbone’s from Dominic Carbone, who taught them his secrets for making Italian sausage.

Then they launched one of the most popular sandwich shops in town, consistently winning acclaim for sandwiches with things like house-made sausage seasoned with fennel and red pepper flakes, then topped with provolone.

“Carbone’s a name everyone is going to know,” said Nigg. “We’re going to start with the ‘greatest hits’ collection of Carbone’s sandwiches, and then have some Italian-style dinner fun things with a menu to fit the neighborhood.”
